Fire and smoke damage in your kitchen? Before you try and do the cleanup yourself, know the facts.

After a minor kitchen fire, some may think they can do the cleanup themselves. But it’s important to know the facts about fire and smoke damage before you try and “do it yourself.”

The main reasons you should not try and clean up after a kitchen fire is that you could actually cause more damage and risk your health by doing so. Professional restoration is necessary to properly clean up after a kitchen fire, and restore your home to a healthy condition.

After a fire in your kitchen, if smoke, soot and ash are not removed from the fire site quickly, they will continue to cause damage and corrosion to surfaces and materials in your kitchen such as fabrics, metals, walls, ceilings, and even tiles. Therefore, it is critical to begin professional clean up as soon as possible.

Vacuuming, wiping down the walls, touching fabric , and any other attempt at cleaning can not only put you at risk of inhaling the dangerous chemicals that are in soot and ash, it could cause further damage to your property. Ash and soot require specialized cleaning from a fire restoration professional.

Additionally, smoke and odour particles continue to be airborne many days after the fire has stopped. Advanced deodorization tools such as ozone and other professional treatments can effectively eliminate after-fire odour from your home.

What should you do after a fire to reduce odours and soot?

  • If the temperature is above 15⁰C or 60⁰F, air out the house to reduce smoke odour
  • If you have a forced air furnace, change the air filter
  • Tape damp cheesecloth over air return and supply registers to capture loose soot in the air
  • Do not touch anything with bare hands. Oils from hands can permeate upholstery, walls and woodwork, and cause additional damage
  • Do not wash walls. Incorrect cleaning could cause further damage from soot residue
